Catherine Mentz is a talented South African water polo player who has achieved success both locally and internationally. She represented Eden Water Polo U19 at the SA Schools Interprovincial Tournament in Cape Town, where the team won the Outstanding Sportsmanship Trophy.

Her international breakthrough came in 2022, when she was selected for the South Africa U17 National Team. As part of the starting seven, she helped the team secure 1st place at the EU Nations Cup in Brno, Czech Republic.

In addition, she competed for the Eden U18 Team at the SA Junior Nationals and for the Manta Rays Senior Ladies Team at the SA Senior Nationals in East London. She was also named to the All-Star Tournament Team at the Reef Invitational in Johannesburg.

Recognising her outstanding potential, Wagner College in New York recruited her on a college water polo scholarship. Competing in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC), she has continued to balance excellence in the pool and classroom.

She was named to the MAAC Water Polo All-Academic Team two years in a row — an honour reserved for student-athletes who maintain a GPA of 3.20 or higher over at least two semesters.

Catherine Mentz’s journey from Glenwood House School in South Africa to Wagner College in the U.S. highlights her determination, leadership, and commitment to success. Her story is an inspiring example of how a college water polo scholarship can open doors to international competition and academic achievement.
