Aidan’s Journey in College Esports

Aidan Smale, an esports athlete from South Africa, began his journey at King Edward VII School in Johannesburg. With the support of BRUSA Sports, he secured an esports scholarship to study and compete at the University of Rio Grande, Ohio.

At Rio Grande, Aidan joined the  Redstorm College ESports Team, quickly making his mark as a leader and competitor. He served as the Valorant Captain, guiding the squad in the NECC’s top divisions. In addition, he helped establish the program as a respected force in U.S. college esports.

Leadership and Achievements

From 2022–2023, Aidan represented over 200 universities as the Student Representative on the NECC Competition Committee . In this role, he worked directly with league leadership to shape tournament structures and policies. As a result, he influenced the direction of competitive collegiate esports across the country.

While competing, Aidan also gained valuable experience off the stage. Between 2021 and 2025, he worked in the University’s Esports Arena, managing technology upgrades, maintaining systems, and ensuring smooth performance for training, matches, and live broadcasts. Furthermore, he supported the program through marketing and operations, bridging gameplay with community engagement.

Aidan’s Impact

Aidan’s story proves what is possible with an esports scholarship. He combined leadership, competition, and academic achievement to graduate with a Computer Science degree and a Professional Communications minor. Above all, he built skills that will serve him long after graduation.
