Haven’t Signed Yet? Why Your Recruitment Journey Is Far From Over
Every year around June 15th, social media fills up with commitment graphics, signing photos, and announcements from athletes celebrating their future college destinations.
For many student-athletes, it’s an exciting time. But for others, it can feel overwhelming.
The anxiety sets in. I’ve attended camps, I’ve spoken to coaches, but I haven’t received an offer, or the offer I was hoping for.
It’s easy to think you’ve somehow fallen behind.
You haven’t.
The Biggest Myth In College Recruitment
One of the biggest misconceptions in college recruitment is that there is a single deadline by which every athlete must be committed.
That simply isn’t true.
College recruitment is not a race.
Every athlete develops at a different rate, every coach recruits differently, and every program has unique roster needs.
In fact, recruitment has changed significantly over the past few years.
Coaches Are Recruiting Later Than Before
Historically, many coaches recruited very early. But today, the landscape looks very different.
Transfer portal activity, roster uncertainty, scholarship changes, new recruiting rules and budget considerations mean many coaches are waiting longer before they make recruiting decisions.
We regularly speak with coaches who tell us:
“Reach out again once the season starts.”
“We need to see what our current roster looks like.”
“We’re still finalising our Fall 2026 class.”
“We’ll begin focusing on Fall 2027 recruitment later this year.”
Many coaches don’t know exactly what they need until they see their current players in action. While others wait to evaluate transfers, injuries, academic eligibility, or graduation numbers before committing scholarship funds.
Social Media Only Shows One Side Of Recruitment
One of the biggest challenges for modern student-athletes is social media.
You see commitment posts, signing videos, your teammates announcing offers, a plethora of camp adverts pushing attendance or you ‘won’t be seen’.
The truth is you’re scrolling, seeing the highlight reel of maybe 100 people and thinking “EVERYONE HAS COMMITTED BUT ME”.
What you don’t see are the hundreds of athletes who are still actively being recruited, the conversations happening behind the scenes, the athletes improving their grades, getting more playing time, waiting for that final growth spurt before college, working on specific technical abilities.
You don’t see the coaches working on their recruiting lists, building out their teams, waiting to see how their season strategy is going to pan out, wanting to understand what their competition is doing, waiting to see where gaps in their current team exist.
Social media highlights the outcome, not the journey.
Comparison Is The Thief Of Joy
It’s natural to compare yourself to teammates and competitors, but comparison can quickly become destructive.
Someone else’s commitment does not reduce your opportunities! Someone else’s timeline does not determine yours.
Every athlete’s pathway is different, some commit early, some commit late and some transfer. Each journey is so dramatically different, by comparing yours to others you’re only restricting yourself. The goal isn’t to move at the same speed as everyone else, it’s to find the right fit for you!
What Should You Be Doing Right Now?
If you’re still uncommitted, focus on what you can control:
- Continue developing your sport-specific skills. Talk to your coach, what do they think you need to be working on.
- Work hard academically. Remember universities can often stack scholarships. Good grades and academic scholarship opportunities make you more attractive to coaches.
- Update your highlight video.
- Communicate professionally with coaches.
- Attend key showcases, camps, and events.
- Build relationships rather than chasing quick commitments.
- Stay patient and consistent.
Recruitment is often a marathon, not a sprint.
Your Story Isn’t Finished
June 15th is a great day to celebrate athletes who have committed.
But it is not a deadline.
It is not the end of the road.
And it certainly doesn’t mean your dream is over.
The right opportunity often comes when preparation meets patience.
So keep working, improving and believing in yourself!
Your journey is your own, and there is still plenty of time for your next chapter to be written.
