Nick Akoto – From NAIA College Soccer to the Professional Game | Burton Albion (EFL League One)
Home Country: United Kingdom
Sport: Men’s Soccer
College Pathway: Tennessee Wesleyan University (NAIA) → Keiser University (NAIA)
Professional Club: Burton Albion F.C.
Status: Professional Player
Nick Akoto is a UK men’s soccer player who secured a U.S. college soccer scholarship through BRUSA Sports — and went on to sign professionally in both the USA and the UK.
In 2018, with BRUSA Sports’ support, Nick committed to Tennessee Wesleyan University, competing in the NAIA. After two successful seasons, he transferred to Keiser University in Florida to continue his development at collegiate level.
From there, his pathway accelerated — proving that NAIA college soccer can lead directly to the professional game.
College Soccer Development Pathway
During the summers, Nick competed in USL League Two, a high-level summer league designed for college players:
-
Ocean City Nor’easters (New Jersey)
-
South Georgia Tormenta 2
In 2023, Nick signed professionally with South Georgia Tormenta FC in USL League One, marking his official transition into professional soccer in the USA.
In July 2024, he secured a major move back to the UK, signing a three-year deal with Burton Albion in EFL League One for a record-breaking transfer fee.
His journey from NAIA college athlete to professional footballer highlights the power of alternative pathways in U.S. college soccer.
The Importance of Alternative Pathways in College Soccer
There is often an overemphasis on NCAA Division 1, creating a “D1 or nothing” mindset. However:
-
College teams do not operate in age groups
-
Freshmen often compete against 22–23-year-old players
-
Game time is not guaranteed
Our internal analysis of top NCAA D1 programmes (2023/24 season) showed that, on average, only around 30% of freshmen received significant minutes in their first year.
At BRUSA Sports, we prioritise:
-
Game time over prestige
-
Long-term development over short-term labels
-
NAIA and NJCAA as strong professional launchpads
Nick Akoto’s journey is proof that NAIA college soccer can lead to the professional level in both the USA and the UK.
